Aerial images taken over the Philippines reveal the scale of devastation Typhoon Haiyan has caused in the once-vibrant coastal city of Tacloban.

The typhoon, known locally as Yolanda, is believed to have killed 4,000 people.

TACLOBAN CITY- Efforts to clear this city of debris from super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) surpassed the halfway mark as of Thursday night, officials said here Friday.

City administrator John Tecson Lim said here Friday that the clearing operations had reached 50.23 percent as of 10 p.m. Thursday.

Lim disclosed the progress of clearing operations at the inter-agency meeting here.

For its part, the Bureau of Fire Protection said it is supplying almost 100,000 liters of water a day for cleanup operations in 20 to 30 villages and evacuation centers.

Some 10 to 12 fire trucks are used for the daily operations, it said.

Also, it said flushing operations are ongoing at the Astrodome and city airport.

Meanwhile, the peace and order situation continued to improve, with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology saying that of more than 100 inmates who escaped from the city jail, only 85 are still at large.
